1. Manual muscle testing
Medical · Rehabilitation Abbreviations
Examination in which a clinician grades muscle strength by resistance against movement on a 0 to 5 scale: 0 no contraction, 1 flicker, 2 movement with gravity eliminated, 3 against gravity, 4 against some resistance, 5 normal.
Example: MMT: hip flexion 3+/5, knee extension 4/5, ankle DF 2/5 L.
The 0 to 5 scale is often called the Medical Research Council (MRC) scale, from British work during World War II. Plus and minus grades add detail. Handheld dynamometers give more objective measurements for research and tracking.
2. Modern monetary theory
Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations
Heterodox macroeconomic school arguing that a government issuing its own currency cannot run out of money in that currency, so its spending is limited mainly by inflation and real resources rather than by debt levels. In this view, taxes mainly control inflation rather than fund spending.
Example: Supporters of MMT argue that a federal job guarantee could be financed without raising taxes first.
Associated with economists Warren Mosler, L. Randall Wray and Stephanie Kelton, whose 2020 book The Deficit Myth popularized it. Mainstream economists criticize MMT for underestimating inflation risks and the political difficulty of raising taxes. It drew wide attention in US policy debates around 2019 and 2020.
