HDI stands for Human Development Index, an economics abbreviation.

Composite index published by the United Nations Development Programme that ranks countries by life expectancy, education and gross national income per capita on a scale from 0 to 1. It aims to measure development beyond income alone.

Example: Nordic countries and Switzerland regularly rank near the top of the HDI, while countries in the Sahel rank near the bottom.

Usage notes

Created in 1990 by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq with input from Amartya Sen, it appears in the annual Human Development Report. Variants adjust for inequality (IHDI) and for planetary pressures. Critics note that the index weights its three components equally, an arbitrary choice.
