1. International Paralympic Committee
Sports · Sports Governing Body Abbreviations
Global governing body of the Paralympic movement, which organizes the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, held shortly after the Olympics in the same host city. It also acts as the international federation for several para sports, including para athletics, para swimming and para alpine skiing.
Example: Para swimmers must be classified under IPC rules before they can compete internationally.
Founded on September 22, 1989, in Düsseldorf, Germany, and headquartered in Bonn. The Paralympics grew out of the 1948 Stoke Mandeville Games organized by neurologist Ludwig Guttmann; the first Games now counted as Paralympics were held in Rome in 1960. A 2001 agreement between the IOC and IPC requires Olympic host cities to stage the Paralympics as well.
2. Infection prevention and control
Medical · Hospital Abbreviations
Practices and programs that stop infections spreading in healthcare settings, including hand hygiene, isolation precautions, cleaning, sterilization and surveillance. Programs are led by infection preventionists and overseen by a hospital infection control committee.
Example: IPC rounds: hand hygiene compliance 92 percent on 6 West.
The World Health Organization uses IPC as the international term and publishes core components for national programs. In nursing, IPC also means intermittent pneumatic compression, a device for preventing blood clots. Hand hygiene remains the single most important IPC measure.
3. Intermittent pneumatic compression
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Mechanical way of preventing venous thromboembolism in which air-filled cuffs around the legs or feet inflate and deflate to mimic the calf-muscle pump. It is used when anticoagulants are contraindicated, such as with active bleeding, or alongside them in high-risk surgical patients.
Example: VTE prophylaxis: IPC bilateral lower extremities, no pharmacologic ppx due to GI bleed.
SCDs and foot pumps are both IPC devices, and guidelines use IPC as the umbrella term. In infection control the same letters mean infection prevention and control, so context tells which is meant. Benefit depends on wearing the devices for most of the time spent in bed, not only overnight.
4. Instructions per clock
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Average number of instructions a processor core completes in each clock cycle, a measure of architectural efficiency. Performance is roughly IPC multiplied by clock speed, so a chip with higher IPC can beat a faster-clocked rival.
Example: AMD claimed a 16 percent IPC uplift for Zen 5 over Zen 4 at the same frequency.
Also expanded as instructions per cycle. Gains come from wider execution engines, larger caches, better branch prediction and deeper out-of-order buffers. AMD's original Zen architecture (2017) claimed a 52 percent IPC jump over its predecessor, which revived the company's fortunes. In software, IPC more often means inter-process communication.
5. Inter-process communication
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
Mechanisms that let separate processes exchange data and coordinate, such as pipes, sockets, shared memory, message queues and signals. Browsers, databases and desktop apps rely on IPC between their component processes.
Example: Electron apps pass messages between the renderer and the main process over IPC.
Operating systems isolate each process's memory, so cooperation requires IPC; Chrome's multi-process design depends on it heavily. D-Bus on Linux and COM and named pipes on Windows are platform-specific systems. In processor specifications IPC instead means instructions per clock, a performance measure.
