1. Labor and delivery

Medical · Hospital Abbreviations

Hospital unit where women in labor are monitored and give birth, with facilities for vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections and obstetric emergencies. Nurses monitor contractions and fetal heart rate.

Example: Pt to L&D at 6 cm dilated, contracting q3min, epidural requested.

Also called the birthing unit. Many units include triage rooms where pregnant patients are assessed for labor, bleeding or reduced fetal movement. After birth, mothers usually move to a postpartum or mother-baby unit unless the hospital uses single-room LDRP care.

2. Learning and development

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Function that plans and delivers employee training, onboarding programs, leadership development, compliance courses and career development. L&D teams manage course catalogs, coaching and tuition assistance, often through a learning management system.

Example: L&D is rolling out a new manager training program in the spring.

A widely cited guideline, the 70-20-10 model attributed to researchers at the Center for Creative Leadership in the 1980s, holds that about 70% of learning comes from on-the-job experience, 20% from other people and 10% from formal courses. Older organizations may use "training and development" (T&D) for the same function.
