1. Nursing Outcomes Classification

Medical · Nursing Abbreviations

Standardized list of measurable patient outcomes influenced by nursing care, each rated on a five-point scale, such as "Pain Level" or "Mobility". It is used to set goals and evaluate progress in care plans.

Example: NOC Mobility rated 2 on admission, target 4 by discharge.

Also developed at the University of Iowa, first published in 1997. Using the same scale at each evaluation makes progress comparable between nurses and shifts. Outside healthcare NOC means network operations center, a meaning unrelated to nursing.

2. Network operations center

Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations

A staffed facility, often with wall-sized monitoring screens, where engineers watch an organization's networks and services around the clock, respond to outages and coordinate maintenance. ISPs, carriers, banks and large IT departments run NOCs.

Example: The NOC opened a ticket with the carrier after spotting packet loss on the Chicago link at 2 a.m.

Pronounced "knock". A NOC focuses on availability and performance, while a security operations center (SOC) focuses on threats, though some organizations combine them. Many companies outsource NOC services to managed service providers. "NOC-to-NOC" contacts are how carriers escalate problems with each other.

3. National Olympic Committee

Sports · Sports Governing Body Abbreviations

Body recognized by the IOC in each country or territory to enter athletes in the Olympic Games; there were 206 NOCs as of 2024. NOCs select teams, promote the Olympic movement at home and handle matters such as uniforms and team logistics.

Example: Each NOC may enter only a limited quota of athletes in most individual Olympic events.

Pronounced as letters. Examples include the USOPC, the British Olympic Association (which brands its team as Team GB) and the Canadian Olympic Committee. The Olympic Charter requires NOCs to stay independent of government, and the IOC has suspended committees over political interference. Since 2016 a Refugee Olympic Team has competed without an NOC.
