IOTV stands for Improved Outer Tactical Vest, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
US Army body armor vest introduced in the late 2000s, holding ceramic plates and soft armor, with a quick-release feature so a soldier can shed it rapidly in an emergency such as a vehicle rollover into water.
Example: The soldier pulled the quick-release cable and the IOTV fell apart in seconds.
Usage notes
The IOTV replaced the Interceptor Outer Tactical Vest and is itself being succeeded by lighter, modular armor systems. Its weight with plates is roughly 30 pounds, depending on size. Pronounced as letters.
