JDAM stands for Joint Direct Attack Munition, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Tail kit that turns an unguided bomb into an all-weather precision-guided weapon using GPS and inertial navigation. JDAM-equipped bombs, such as the GBU-31, are carried by almost every US strike aircraft.
Example: B-2 bombers dropped JDAMs on command bunkers during the opening night.
Usage notes
Built by Boeing, JDAM was first used in combat by B-2s over Kosovo in 1999. Because guidance does not depend on lasers, it works through clouds and smoke. The United States has supplied JDAM kits to Ukraine, Israel and other partners. Pronounced "JAY-dam."
