1. Kansas City

Geography & Places · City and Neighborhood Abbreviations

Common short form for Kansas City, the metro area that straddles the Missouri–Kansas state line. Kansas City, Missouri, is the larger city, known for barbecue, jazz history and more fountains than almost any city in the world.

Example: KC barbecue joints argue endlessly over burnt ends and sauce.

Because there are two Kansas Cities, locals use KCMO and KCK to be precise. KC also refers to local teams such as the Chiefs and Royals.

2. King's Counsel

Law & Legal · Legal Profession Abbreviations

Senior rank conferred on experienced barristers and solicitor-advocates in England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and several Commonwealth countries, written after the name, as in "Jane Smith KC". Appointment is called "taking silk" because KCs wear silk gowns.

Example: The defendants have instructed a leading KC to argue the appeal in the Supreme Court.

The title changed automatically from QC to KC for all holders on the accession of King Charles III on September 8, 2022. In England and Wales, appointments since 2005 have been recommended by an independent selection panel rather than chosen by the Lord Chancellor. Ireland and Hong Kong use Senior Counsel instead. In the US, KC usually means Kansas City.

3. Tanker-cargo aircraft

Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations

US designation prefix for aerial refueling tankers that can also carry cargo, including the KC-135 Stratotanker, KC-46 Pegasus and Marine Corps KC-130J. The tanker extends the reach of combat aircraft.

Example: Two KC-135s refueled the bombers over the Atlantic.

The KC-135 entered service in 1957 and many are still flying. The KC-46 Pegasus was bought to replace older tankers such as the KC-10 Extender. Tankers let fighters and bombers reach targets far beyond their normal range. Boom operators sit at the tail and steer the refueling boom into receiving aircraft.
