HGV stands for Hypersonic glide vehicle, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Maneuvering warhead launched by a rocket that then glides through the upper atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound, making its path harder to predict and intercept than a ballistic warhead.
Example: China's DF-17 missile carries an HGV designed to evade missile defenses.
Usage notes
Russia's Avangard and China's DF-17 are deployed HGV systems, and the United States is developing its own hypersonic weapons. Hypersonic cruise missiles, which use air-breathing engines, are a separate category. In transport, HGV means heavy goods vehicle in British English.
