1. Lines, drains and airways

Medical · Nursing Abbreviations

Flowsheet section in several electronic health records where every invasive device, such as IVs, central lines, catheters, drains, tubes and airways, is documented with insertion date, site, size and daily assessments.

Example: Updated LDA: removed L hand PIV, added R chest tube 28 Fr.

Some systems display LDAs on a body diagram so the oncoming nurse can see every device at a glance. Keeping LDAs current lets the record calculate device days, which feed infection metrics like CLABSI and CAUTI rates. Removing devices promptly in the chart avoids phantom lines being counted.

2. Linear discriminant analysis

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations · also used in technology

A classification and dimensionality-reduction method that finds linear combinations of features that best separate two or more classes. It assumes each class is normally distributed with a shared covariance matrix.

Example: LDA classified the iris species with 98 percent accuracy using four flower measurements.

Ronald Fisher introduced the linear discriminant in 1936 using the now-famous iris data set. In natural language processing, LDA usually means latent Dirichlet allocation, a topic-modeling method published in 2003, so the field decides which is meant.

3. Latent Dirichlet allocation

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

A probabilistic topic model that represents each document as a mixture of topics and each topic as a distribution over words, discovering themes in large text collections without labels.

Example: LDA found 20 topics in the complaint emails, including billing errors and late deliveries.

Introduced by David Blei, Andrew Ng and Michael Jordan in 2003. The number of topics must be chosen in advance, and the topics need human interpretation. Embedding-based methods such as BERTopic have largely replaced it in new projects. In machine learning LDA can also mean linear discriminant analysis; topics, documents and words point to this meaning.
