1. Kilogram

Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations

The SI base unit of mass, about 2.2046 pounds. Since 20 May 2019 it has been defined by fixing the value of the Planck constant, replacing the platinum-iridium cylinder kept near Paris since 1889.

Example: The airline allows one checked bag of up to 23 kg on economy fares.

The kilogram is the only SI base unit with a prefix in its name; prefixes attach to the gram, so a million grams is a megagram, not a kilokilogram. Informal forms include kilo and kilos, while Kg, KG and kgs are incorrect. The retired artifact, the International Prototype Kilogram or "Le Grand K", is still kept at the BIPM in Sevres, France.

2. Kyrgyzstan (KG)

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Mountainous Central Asian country, about 90 percent covered by the Tian Shan and Pamir ranges, with Bishkek as its capital and KGZ as its alpha-3 code.

Example: Trekking permits for KG are needed for some border zones near China.

In lowercase kg means kilogram. The language code for Kyrgyz is ky, which is the ISO country code for the Cayman Islands.

3. Kommanditgesellschaft (limited partnership) (KG)

Business & Finance · Company Type Abbreviations

German and Austrian limited partnership with at least one general partner (Komplementär) who has unlimited liability and at least one limited partner (Kommanditist) liable only up to a registered contribution. It is common among family businesses and investment structures.

Example: The family trading house operates as a KG, with the founder as general partner and her children as limited partners.

The KG is often combined with a GmbH as general partner to create a GmbH & Co. KG, in which no individual bears unlimited liability. Switzerland also recognizes the Kommanditgesellschaft. Written in lowercase, kg is the symbol for kilogram.

4. Knowledge graph (KG)

Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations

A database that represents facts as a network of entities, such as people, places and products, connected by labeled relationships. Search engines, recommendation systems and enterprise data platforms use knowledge graphs to answer questions and link information.

Example: The KG links each drug to its targets, trials and side effects, so analysts can traverse them.

Google popularized the term with its Knowledge Graph in 2012, which powers the information panels beside search results. Wikidata is the largest open knowledge graph. Knowledge graphs are increasingly combined with language models in "GraphRAG" systems. In measurement, kg is the kilogram.
