GRADE stands for Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation, a medical research abbreviation.
Widely used framework for rating the certainty of a body of evidence as high, moderate, low or very low, and for grading the strength of recommendations as strong or conditional. Certainty can be rated down for risk of bias, inconsistency, indirectness, imprecision or publication bias.
Example: GRADE: conditional recommendation, low certainty of evidence.
Usage notes
Developed by the GRADE Working Group, which began in 2000, and adopted by the WHO, Cochrane, NICE and more than 100 organizations. Randomized trials start as high certainty and observational studies as low. Evidence-to-decision frameworks add patient values, resources and feasibility to the evidence.
