HTA stands for Health technology assessment, a medical research abbreviation.

Systematic evaluation of the clinical, economic, social and ethical implications of health technologies such as drugs, devices and procedures, carried out to inform coverage, pricing and policy decisions. National HTA agencies advise governments and payers.

Example: A positive HTA from NICE means the NHS in England must fund the drug within 90 days.

Usage notes

Major agencies include NICE in England, Canada's Drug Agency (formerly CADTH) and IQWiG in Germany. The European Union began joint clinical assessments of new cancer medicines and advanced therapies under its HTA Regulation in 2025. Assessments combine trial evidence, economic modeling and stakeholder input.
