1. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratio
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Extra cost of a health intervention divided by the extra health benefit it produces compared with an alternative, usually expressed as cost per QALY gained. It is the central result of most cost-effectiveness analyses.
Example: ICER of $48,000 per QALY gained versus standard care.
Decision-makers compare the ICER with a willingness-to-pay threshold, and interventions that cost less and work better are called "dominant". Uncertainty is explored with sensitivity analyses and cost-effectiveness acceptability curves. The same letters also name a Boston research institute.
2. Institute for Clinical and Economic Review
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
Independent nonprofit research organization in Boston that evaluates the clinical effectiveness and value of drugs and other health interventions and publishes health-benefit price benchmarks. Its reports influence US drug pricing debates and payer coverage decisions.
Example: ICER's report concluded the gene therapy would need a price below $2 million to be cost-effective.
Founded in 2006 by physician Steven Pearson. ICER holds public meetings at which independent panels vote on evidence and value. Drug makers and some patient groups criticize its reliance on QALYs, and it also reports an alternative measure, the equal value of life years gained (evLYG).
