1. Emergency use authorization
Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations
FDA mechanism under section 564 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act allowing unapproved medical products, or unapproved uses of approved products, during a declared public health emergency when no adequate approved alternative exists and the known and potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Example: The test kits were sold under EUA before receiving full clearance.
EUAs became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the first vaccines were authorized in December 2020 before later full approval. An EUA is not an approval and ends when the emergency declaration ends or the authorization is revoked. In surgery EUA means examination under anesthesia.
2. Examination under anesthesia
Medical · Surgical Abbreviations
Physical examination performed while the patient is anesthetized, allowing a thorough, painless assessment of areas difficult to examine awake, such as the anorectum, pelvis, a young child's eyes or a stiff joint. It is often combined with a procedure such as biopsy or abscess drainage.
Example: EUA, flexible sigmoidoscopy and drainage of perianal abscess with seton placement.
Common in colorectal surgery, gynecologic oncology staging, pediatric ophthalmology and orthopedics, where joint stability is tested. In drug regulation EUA means emergency use authorization, an unrelated term.
