HRQoL stands for Health-related quality of life, a medical research abbreviation.
Aspects of quality of life affected by health and health care, such as physical functioning, pain, energy, emotional well-being and social roles. HRQoL is measured with generic instruments such as the SF-36 and EQ-5D or with disease-specific questionnaires.
Example: HRQoL measured with the EQ-5D at baseline, 6 and 12 months.
Usage notes
EQ-5D results can be converted to utility values between 0 (death) and 1 (full health) that feed into QALY calculations. The SF-36, published in 1992, came out of the Medical Outcomes Study. Also written HRQOL.
