1. Family physician (family practice)

Medical · Medical Specialty Abbreviations

Physician who practices family medicine, or the older name for the specialty itself (family practice). FPs provide continuous, comprehensive care for individuals and families across the life span and coordinate referrals to other specialists.

Example: New patient visit with an FP accepting Medicare in her town.

"Family practice" has largely given way to "family medicine", but FP remains common in insurance directories and job postings. Family physicians differ from general practitioners in having completed an accredited family medicine residency. In research and diagnostics, FP means false positive.

2. Functional programming

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A programming paradigm that builds software from pure functions, which return the same output for the same input and avoid side effects, and treats functions as values to pass around. Haskell, Elixir, Clojure and F# are functional languages, and JavaScript, Python and Java borrow many FP features.

Example: The team leaned into FP style, using map, filter and reduce instead of mutating arrays.

Rooted in Alonzo Church's lambda calculus of the 1930s and the Lisp language of 1958. Immutable data and pure functions make concurrent code easier to reason about. Lambdas, closures and higher-order functions spread into mainstream languages during the 2010s.

3. Fireplace

Writing & Everyday · Classified Ad Abbreviations · also used in business

Indicates a fireplace in a home listing, sometimes specified as wood-burning (WBFP) or gas. It is a desirable feature in cold-climate markets.

Example: Living room features a stone FP, built-in bookshelves and bay windows.

In New York City listings, a WBFP is a premium feature because many apartment fireplaces are decorative or non-working. Buyers should ask whether the chimney has been inspected recently. Listings sometimes write "fplc" or "frpl" instead.
