HNWI stands for High-net-worth individual, a finance abbreviation.
Person with substantial investable assets, conventionally at least $1 million excluding the primary residence, who is targeted by private banks and wealth managers. Ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) are usually defined as having $30 million or more.
Example: The private bank's minimum relationship size of $5 million limits it to HNWI clients.
Usage notes
The thresholds come from industry reports such as the Capgemini World Wealth Report, and definitions vary by firm and country. Also written HNW or HNI, the latter especially common in India. The SEC's "accredited investor" test uses a similar $1 million net worth threshold that excludes the primary residence.
