1. Future value
Business & Finance · Finance Abbreviations
Value that a sum invested today, or a series of payments, will grow to at a given interest rate after a specified number of periods, assuming compounding. It is central to retirement planning, savings goals and loan calculations.
Example: With monthly deposits of $500 at 7 percent annual interest, the account's FV after 20 years is roughly $260,000.
For a single sum, FV equals the present value multiplied by one plus the rate, raised to the number of periods. Compounding frequency matters: monthly compounding produces a higher FV than annual compounding at the same nominal rate. In accounting, FV also abbreviates fair value, a market-based price rather than a projected sum.
2. Fair value
Business & Finance · Accounting Abbreviations
Price that would be received to sell an asset, or paid to transfer a liability, in an orderly transaction between market participants at the measurement date. Fair value accounting applies to many financial instruments, to investment property under IFRS and to assets acquired in business combinations.
Example: The fund's private holdings are measured at FV using Level 3 inputs such as discounted cash flow models.
Both US GAAP (ASC 820) and IFRS (IFRS 13) use a three-level hierarchy: Level 1 for quoted prices in active markets, Level 2 for other observable inputs and Level 3 for unobservable inputs. Some critics blamed fair value accounting for amplifying losses in the 2008 financial crisis. In finance formulas, FV more often means future value.
3. Fishing vessel
Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations
Prefix for commercial fishing boats, as in FV Andrea Gail, the swordfishing boat lost in the 1991 storm made famous by "The Perfect Storm." Also written F/V.
Example: The Coast Guard rescued four crew from FV Northern Star after it took on water in the Bering Sea.
Commercial fishing is consistently one of the deadliest occupations in the US. The prefix is commonly seen in Coast Guard news releases and fishing documentaries such as "Deadliest Catch." Fishing vessels have their own safety regulations, separate from most merchant shipping rules.
