1. Gram-negative rods
Medical · Infectious Disease Abbreviations
Microbiology description of rod-shaped bacteria that stain pink with Gram stain, including E. coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter and Proteus. A Gram stain reporting GNR in blood allows targeted empiric therapy hours before species identification.
Example: Blood culture: GNR in 1 of 2 sets at 14 hours; start cefepime pending ID and susceptibilities.
Also written GNB (gram-negative bacilli). The stain was developed by Danish physician Hans Christian Gram in 1884. Gram-negative bacteria have an outer membrane that makes many antibiotics less effective. Rapid molecular panels now identify species and key resistance genes directly from positive blood cultures.
2. Gunner (Gnr)
Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations
Private soldiers of the Royal Artillery, Royal Horse Artillery and the artillery of several Commonwealth armies hold this title. Gunners crew field guns, rocket launchers and air defence systems or work in surveillance and target acquisition.
Example: Gnr Patel joined 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery after completing training at Larkhill.
The Royal Artillery is itself nicknamed "the Gunners." In the Royal Air Force, members of the RAF Regiment are also informally called gunners. In the Royal Navy and US Marine Corps, gunner historically referred to a warrant officer responsible for ordnance.
