gNB stands for Next-generation Node B, a telecom abbreviation.
Base station of a 5G New Radio network, also written gNodeB, which connects phones to the 5G core over NR radio. It can be split into central and distributed units for flexible deployment.
Example: The operator activated a gNB on each streetlight along the main avenue.
Usage notes
A gNB can be divided into a central unit (CU) handling higher-layer processing and distributed units (DU) near the antennas, enabling cloud-based and Open RAN designs. In non-standalone deployments, gNBs work alongside 4G eNBs. The "g" stands for next generation in 3GPP terminology.
