1. Foreign exchange

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

Market for trading currencies, in which one currency is exchanged for another, and by extension the exchange rates themselves. It is the largest financial market in the world, with average daily turnover of about $7.5 trillion in April 2022, according to the Bank for International Settlements.

Example: The company's quarterly revenue took a 3 percent hit from adverse FX movements as the dollar strengthened.

Turnover figures come from the BIS triennial survey of central banks and dealers. London is the largest FX trading center, followed by New York, and the US dollar is on one side of almost 90 percent of all trades. Also called forex, and written F/X in some older texts.

2. Fracture (Fx)

Medical · Medical Documentation Abbreviations

Shorthand for a broken bone, used with the bone name and type, as in "R distal radius Fx" or "hip Fx". It appears in emergency, orthopedic and radiology notes.

Example: XR: nondisplaced L 5th metatarsal Fx; walking boot and ortho f/u.

Fracture descriptions add whether it is open or closed, displaced, comminuted or angulated. Some writers use Fx for function or family history, so context matters. Fragility fractures from a standing-height fall prompt osteoporosis evaluation.
