GNH stands for Gross national happiness, an economics abbreviation.
Development philosophy and index used by Bhutan that measures national progress by well-being across areas such as psychological health, education, culture, good governance and environmental conservation, rather than by economic output alone.
Example: Bhutan's government screens new policies against GNH criteria before approving them.
Usage notes
The phrase is attributed to Bhutan's fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, in the 1970s, and Bhutan's 2008 constitution directs the state to promote conditions for GNH. The Centre for Bhutan Studies developed a formal index with nine domains. The idea helped inspire the UN-backed World Happiness Report.
