f/u stands for Follow-up, a medical documentation abbreviation.
Planned future visit, call, test or review to check progress or results, used in plans and discharge instructions, as in "f/u with PCP in 1 week". It also describes a visit that checks on a previous problem.
Example: F/u with cardiology in 2 weeks; repeat echo prior to visit.
Usage notes
Also written F/U or FU. A clear follow-up plan names who, when and why, and tells the patient what to do if the appointment does not arrive. Missed follow-up of pending tests is a common patient safety problem after discharge.
