1. Flight information region

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Block of airspace in which a designated authority provides flight information and alerting services, used by ICAO to divide the world's skies, including oceans. Large or busy FIRs are split into en-route control sectors.

Example: The crew passed from the Gander Oceanic FIR into the Shanwick FIR at 30 degrees west.

Each FIR has a four-letter ICAO identifier, and position reports or datalink logons are required when crossing boundaries. Overflight fees are charged by many countries for flights through their FIRs. Some FIRs cross national borders by agreement, so one country may handle airspace above another's territory or the high seas.

2. Fairways in regulation

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Golf statistic counting tee shots that finish on the fairway on par-4 and par-5 holes. Also called fairways hit or driving accuracy.

Example: She was 12 of 14 FIR, the most accurate driving of her week.

Par-3 holes are excluded because players aim for the green from the tee. Long hitters often accept lower FIR in exchange for shorter approach shots.
