1. Decision Review System

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Cricket system that lets teams challenge an on-field umpire's decision using replays, ball-tracking and edge-detection technology. Each team has a limited number of unsuccessful reviews per innings.

Example: The bowler called for DRS, and ball-tracking showed the ball clipping leg stump.

First trialed in a Test series between India and Sri Lanka in 2008. If ball-tracking shows the ball only marginally hitting the stumps, the "umpire's call" rule keeps the original decision. In Formula One DRS meant drag reduction system.

2. Defensive runs saved

Sports · Baseball Abbreviations

Fielding metric from Sports Info Solutions estimating how many runs a player saved or cost compared with an average fielder at his position, considering range, arm, double plays and more.

Example: His plus-22 DRS was the best of any outfielder in baseball.

Developed by John Dewan and introduced in The Fielding Bible series of books. Zero is average, and plus-10 or better is excellent over a season. In Formula One and cricket DRS means drag reduction system and decision review system respectively.

3. Drag reduction system

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Formula One overtaking aid used from 2011 to 2025: a flap in the rear wing that opened on designated straights when a car was within one second of the car ahead, reducing drag and adding speed.

Example: He used DRS on the main straight to complete the pass into turn one.

The 2026 regulations replaced DRS with active aerodynamics on all cars and a manual energy boost for overtaking. In cricket DRS means decision review system, and in baseball defensive runs saved.
