1. Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations

Thirty-second President of the United States (1933-1945), the only president elected four times, who led the country through the Great Depression and most of World War II. His New Deal created Social Security, the WPA and federal deposit insurance, among other programs.

Example: FDR's fireside chats used radio to explain policy directly to the public.

Roosevelt was stricken with a paralytic illness, diagnosed as polio, in 1921 and used a wheelchair in private. He died in office in April 1945, and his four victories led to the 22nd Amendment's two-term limit. The FDR Memorial in Washington opened in 1997, and Manhattan's FDR Drive is named for him.

2. False discovery rate

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

The expected proportion of false positives among all results declared significant. Controlling the FDR, rather than the chance of any false positive, is standard in genomics and other fields that test thousands of hypotheses.

Example: Genes with FDR-adjusted p-values below 0.05 were considered differentially expressed.

Yoav Benjamini and Yosef Hochberg introduced the FDR and their step-up procedure in 1995, now one of the most cited papers in statistics. It is less conservative than the Bonferroni correction, which controls the family-wise error rate. The q-value is the FDR analog of a p-value.

3. Flight data recorder

Transportation & Travel · Aviation Abbreviations

Crash-protected recorder that logs hundreds or thousands of aircraft parameters, such as altitude, airspeed, heading, control positions and engine data, covering at least the last 25 hours of operation. Investigators combine it with the cockpit voice recorder to reconstruct accidents.

Example: Investigators recovered the FDR from the wreckage and found the final two minutes of data intact.

Together with the cockpit voice recorder it is popularly called the "black box," though both are painted bright orange to be found easily. Australian scientist David Warren developed an early flight recorder prototype in the 1950s. Each recorder carries an underwater locator beacon; newer units must ping for 90 days instead of the former 30.
