1. Epilepsy monitoring unit

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Specialized inpatient unit where patients undergo continuous video-EEG for several days, often with antiseizure medications reduced, to capture and characterize their typical events. It confirms or excludes epilepsy, identifies seizure origin before surgery and diagnoses functional seizures.

Example: Admitted to the EMU for 5 days; three typical events captured, all arising from the right temporal lobe.

Medication tapering raises the chance of capturing events but requires close supervision because of the risk of severe seizures and falls. EMU findings feed into epilepsy surgery planning along with MRI, PET and neuropsychological testing. Comprehensive epilepsy centers in the US are accredited by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers.

2. Economic and Monetary Union

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

Framework of the European Union that coordinates economic and fiscal policy and, for the 21 countries that have adopted the euro, provides a single currency and a single monetary policy run by the European Central Bank. The term is also used loosely for the eurozone itself.

Example: Bulgaria's adoption of the euro in January 2026 made it the 21st member of EMU's single-currency area.

EMU was built in three stages under the 1992 Maastricht Treaty, culminating in the euro's launch in 1999 and euro notes and coins in 2002. Countries must meet convergence criteria on inflation, deficits, debt, exchange rates and long-term interest rates to join. Denmark has a legal opt-out from the single currency.

3. Electric multiple unit

Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations

Passenger train made of self-propelled cars powered by electricity from overhead wires or a third rail, with motors distributed under several cars instead of a separate locomotive. Most subway, commuter and high-speed trains are EMUs.

Example: The new EMU fleet accelerates much faster than the old locomotive-hauled trains, cutting journey times.

Multiple units can be coupled together and controlled from a single cab. Distributed power gives better acceleration and traction. In Australia, emu is also the name of a large flightless bird, an unrelated meaning.
