1. Exploratory data analysis

Technology & Computing · Data & Database Abbreviations · also used in measurement

The first stage of a data analysis, in which analysts summarize and visualize a dataset with statistics, histograms, scatter plots and correlations to understand its structure, spot errors and form hypotheses before modeling.

Example: EDA showed that 8 percent of the ages were negative, so the import has a bug.

Promoted by statistician John Tukey in his 1977 book "Exploratory Data Analysis", which introduced the box plot. Python's pandas and seaborn and R's tidyverse are common tools. In software architecture EDA means event-driven architecture, and in chip design electronic design automation.

2. Electronic design automation

Science & Engineering · Electronics & Electrical Abbreviations

Software tools for designing electronic systems, from schematics and circuit board layout to chip design, simulation and verification. Integrated circuits with billions of transistors could not be designed without EDA tools.

Example: The team uses EDA software to route the eight-layer board and check signal integrity.

Cadence Design Systems, Synopsys and Siemens EDA (formerly Mentor Graphics) dominate chip-design EDA, while KiCad is a popular open-source tool for circuit boards. US export controls have restricted sales of advanced EDA tools to some Chinese companies. In data science EDA means exploratory data analysis.

3. Event-driven architecture

Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations

A software design in which services communicate by producing and reacting to events, such as "order placed", rather than calling each other directly. Events flow through brokers like Apache Kafka or cloud event buses, letting components scale and evolve independently.

Example: In our EDA, the order service emits OrderPlaced and billing, shipping and email react on their own.

Loose coupling is the main benefit, while tracing one request across many asynchronous handlers is the main difficulty. Patterns such as event sourcing and CQRS often accompany it. In data science EDA means exploratory data analysis, and in chip design electronic design automation.
