DEB stands for Debian package, a file format abbreviation.

Software package format of Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and related distributions, containing compiled files and installation metadata. Packages are installed with dpkg or, with automatic dependency handling, with APT.

Example: Download the .deb from the vendor's website and install it with sudo apt install ./app.deb.

Usage notes

A .deb file is an ar archive holding two compressed tarballs, one for control information and one for the actual files. Debian's packaging policy and huge repository, with tens of thousands of source packages, are among its defining strengths. Red Hat-based distributions use the RPM format instead; the alien tool converts between them with mixed results.
