DMG stands for Apple Disk Image, a file format abbreviation.
Disk image format used on macOS to distribute software and store files, appearing as a virtual drive in Finder when opened. Many Mac apps download as a DMG containing the app and a shortcut to the Applications folder.
Example: Open the DMG, drag the app into Applications, then eject the virtual disk.
Usage notes
DMG files can be compressed, encrypted and code-signed, and Apple's notarization process checks them for malware. Disk Utility creates DMGs, including encrypted containers for private files. Windows cannot open them natively, though 7-Zip can read many. Some Mac apps now ship as PKG installers or ZIP files instead.
