DAA stands for Direct-acting antiviral, an infectious disease abbreviation.
Class of oral hepatitis C drugs that block specific viral proteins (NS3/4A protease, NS5A or NS5B polymerase), curing most infections with few side effects. Pangenotypic combinations such as glecaprevir/pibrentasvir and sofosbuvir/velpatasvir treat all genotypes.
Example: Treatment-naive HCV without cirrhosis; DAA course of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for 8 weeks.
Usage notes
Sofosbuvir's approval in 2013 began the DAA era, replacing interferon-based regimens that caused severe side effects and cured far fewer people. High prices initially led insurers to restrict access. Hepatitis B can reactivate during DAA therapy, so patients are screened first. The term is also used for some newer influenza and COVID-19 antivirals.
