1. Census-designated place
Geography & Places · Region Abbreviations
Unincorporated community defined by the US Census Bureau for statistical purposes, with no municipal government of its own. Examples include The Woodlands, Texas, and Paradise, Nevada, home of the Las Vegas Strip.
Example: The resort town is a CDP, so the county provides police and road maintenance.
Some very large places are CDPs, including Urban Honolulu, the official census name for Honolulu's urban core. CDP boundaries are redrawn for each decennial census.
2. Customer data platform
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Software that collects first-party customer data from websites, apps, stores, email and support systems, unifies it into persistent individual profiles and makes those profiles available to marketing and analytics tools.
Example: The CDP merges in-store purchases with app activity so we can personalize offers.
Analyst David Raab coined the term in 2013. CDPs differ from DMPs by focusing on known customers and personally identifiable first-party data rather than anonymous third-party segments. Vendors include Segment (Twilio), Adobe and Salesforce.
3. Collateralized debt position
Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations
A smart-contract loan in which a user locks crypto collateral to borrow or mint a stablecoin, with the collateral automatically liquidated if its value falls below a set ratio. MakerDAO's DAI stablecoin is created this way.
Example: ETH fell 30 percent overnight, and my CDP was liquidated below its collateral ratio.
MakerDAO introduced the design with DAI in 2017 and later renamed CDPs "vaults". Loans are over-collateralized, often at 150 percent or more. In marketing, CDP means customer data platform, an unrelated meaning.
