CGA stands for Contact guard assist, a rehabilitation abbreviation.
Assistance level in which the helper keeps one or both hands on the patient, often on a gait belt, to steady them, without giving lifting help. The patient performs all of the effort.
Example: Ambulated 75 ft with FWW and CGA; one LOB self-corrected.
Usage notes
A gait belt around the waist gives staff a safe handhold. CGA sits between stand-by assist and minimal assist. Many hospitals require CGA or more for patients at high fall risk until therapy clears them.
