CategoriesMedical

CIMT stands for Constraint-induced movement therapy, a rehabilitation abbreviation.

Stroke rehabilitation method in which the stronger arm is restrained, often with a mitt, for much of the day while the weaker arm practices intensive tasks. It counteracts "learned non-use".

Example: CIMT: mitt on R hand 90 percent of waking hours, 3 hrs shaping tasks daily.

Usage notes

Developed by Edward Taub from research on learned non-use. The EXCITE trial, published in 2006, showed improved arm function in stroke survivors. Candidates need some voluntary wrist and finger extension. Modified versions use shorter daily schedules.
