1. Balance of trade

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

Difference between the value of a country's exports and imports of goods, and sometimes services, over a period. A positive balance is a trade surplus and a negative one a trade deficit.

Example: Germany's BOT surplus narrowed as car exports to China declined.

The trade balance is the largest component of the current account for most countries. The US has run a trade deficit every year since 1976. Economists caution that deficits are not necessarily harmful, since they reflect national saving and investment patterns as well as competitiveness. In infrastructure, BOT means build-operate-transfer.

2. Build-operate-transfer

Business & Finance · Economics Abbreviations

Project-finance arrangement in which a private company finances and builds a public infrastructure asset, such as a toll road, power plant or water treatment facility, operates it for a fixed period to recover its investment and earn a return, then hands it over to the government.

Example: The highway is a 25-year BOT concession, after which the road will revert to the state.

BOT is a common form of public-private partnership in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Variants include BOOT (build-own-operate-transfer) and BOO (build-own-operate), in which ownership is not transferred. The concession contract typically sets toll levels or guaranteed payments.

3. British Overseas Territory

Geography & Places · Region Abbreviations

Status of 14 territories under British sovereignty that are not part of the UK, such as Gibraltar, Bermuda, the Falkland Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Most are self-governing with a governor representing the Crown.

Example: As a BOT, Bermuda sets its own taxes but relies on the UK for defense.

A treaty signed in 2025 provides for the transfer of the Chagos Archipelago (British Indian Ocean Territory) to Mauritius, but UK ratification stalled in 2026. Crown Dependencies such as Jersey and the Isle of Man are a separate category. In software BOT more often means a robot program.
