Federal agency responsible for border security, customs, immigration enforcement at ports of entry and the removal of inadmissible people. Its officers inspect travelers and goods at land crossings, airports and seaports.
Example: The CBSA officer asked how much alcohol she was bringing back from the United States.
Created in December 2003, it combined customs, immigration enforcement and food inspection functions from several departments. It runs the NEXUS trusted-traveler program jointly with US Customs and Border Protection. Its US counterpart is CBP.
2. Core-Based Statistical Area

Umbrella term for US metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas defined by OMB around an urban core and its commuting counties. A micropolitan area has a core of 10,000 to 49,999 people.
Example: Census tables let you filter employment data by CBSA code.
Each CBSA has a five-digit code used in federal data sets. Rural counties outside any CBSA are considered nonmetro and non-micro.
