1. Bedroom
Writing & Everyday · Classified Ad Abbreviations · also used in business
Counts bedrooms in rental and real estate listings, as in "2BR/1BA" or "3 BR house." It is one of the most common abbreviations in housing ads and apartment search filters.
Example: Sunny 2BR/1BA near the park, $1,850 a month, heat and hot water included.
Variants include bd, bdrm and BD. What counts as a bedroom varies: many US building codes require an egress window and a minimum floor area, so a windowless room may be marketed as a "den" or "flex room." A studio has no separate bedroom, and a "junior one-bedroom" is a New York term for a studio with a small separate sleeping area. In email, BR closes a message as "best regards."
2. Bed rest
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Activity order restricting a patient to bed, prescribed after some procedures, for unstable conditions, threatened preterm labor or certain spinal injuries. Because immobility quickly causes muscle loss, pressure injuries and clots, bed rest orders are reviewed often and kept as short as possible.
Example: BR x 6 hours post femoral sheath removal, keep right leg straight.
Frequently combined with BRP (bathroom privileges) or replaced by CBR for complete bed rest. Research has questioned routine bed rest for many conditions, including uncomplicated back pain and most complications of pregnancy, so its use has declined. Outside medicine BR also abbreviates Brazil and, in real estate listings, bedroom.
3. Brazil
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Brazil's code drives the .br domain, BRL for the real and the pt-BR locale for Brazilian Portuguese. The largest country in South America has had Brasília, a planned city inaugurated in 1960, as its capital; alpha-3 is BRA.
Example: Pix transfers only work for accounts registered in BR.
Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas, so locale settings use pt-BR. The .br domain is administered by NIC.br, which uses second-level names such as .com.br.
4. EVA Air
Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations
Taiwanese airline based at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and a member of Star Alliance. It is famous for its Hello Kitty-themed aircraft.
Example: BR 11 from Los Angeles to Taipei has a Hello Kitty jet on some days.
ICAO code EVA; callsign "Eva." Founded in 1989 as a subsidiary of the Evergreen shipping group, from which its name derives. EVA Air is regularly ranked among the world's safest and best airlines. Its green livery mirrors Evergreen's container ships.
5. Brother (Br.)
Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations
Title for members of religious institutes who are not ordained priests, such as the Christian Brothers, De La Salle Brothers and Marist Brothers, and for lay brothers in orders like the Benedictines and Franciscans. It is also used in some Protestant and fraternal communities.
Example: Br. Thomas teaches chemistry at the Christian Brothers high school.
Also written Bro. Religious brothers take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience but do not celebrate Mass. In several Protestant and Pentecostal churches, "Brother" is a general term for male members. Post-nominals such as FSC or CFC usually follow the name.
6. Bromine (Br)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
One of only two elements that are liquid at room temperature (the other is mercury), bromine (atomic number 35) is a dense, red-brown halogen that gives off choking fumes. Brominated compounds serve as flame retardants, drilling fluids and hot-tub disinfectants, and formerly as halon fire suppressants and leaded-fuel additives.
Example: The spa sanitizer tablets release Br, which holds up better than chlorine in hot water.
Antoine Jérôme Balard published its discovery in 1826 after isolating it from salt-marsh brine at Montpellier; Carl Löwig had independently obtained it a year earlier but published later. The name comes from Greek bromos (stench). Bromide salts were widely prescribed as sedatives in the 19th century, which is why a dull platitude is still called a "bromide."
7. Bankruptcy Reporter (B.R.)
Law & Legal · Legal Citation Abbreviations
Bankruptcy decisions from the US bankruptcy courts, bankruptcy appellate panels and district courts fill this West reporter, begun in 1979 when the Bankruptcy Code took effect. It also reprints bankruptcy opinions of the courts of appeals and the Supreme Court.
Example: See In re Johns-Manville Corp., 68 B.R. 618 (Bankr. S.D.N.Y. 1986), confirming the asbestos trust plan.
Bankruptcy court opinions use "Bankr." in the court parenthetical, so a full citation pairs B.R. with something like "Bankr. D. Del." When a court of appeals opinion appears in both F.4th and B.R., the Bluebook prefers the Federal Reporter citation. Outside law, B.R. can mean British Rail.
8. Brief (Br.)
Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations
Citation abbreviation for a written legal argument filed with a court, especially an appellate brief, as in "Appellant's Br. 14" or "Gov't Br. 22". Briefs set out the facts, the issues and the authorities supporting a party's position.
Example: The government conceded the point in its opening brief, see Gov't Br. 22, but now argues otherwise.
Amicus curiae briefs are cited "Amicus Br." and reply briefs "Reply Br." Despite the name, briefs can be long: a principal brief in a federal court of appeals may run to 13,000 words. The Supreme Court requires merits briefs in booklet format with covers color-coded by party.
9. Best regards
Writing & Everyday · Email and Office Abbreviations
Serves as a short email sign-off before the sender's name, abbreviating the closing "Best regards." It turns up mostly in quick replies and messages typed on phones.
Example: Thanks for confirming the delivery date, I'll update the schedule. BR, Tomasz
Etiquette writers consider abbreviated sign-offs informal and sometimes curt, recommending the full phrase with new contacts and in first emails. Other shortened closings include KR (kind regards) and Rgds (regards). In housing ads, BR means bedroom, an unrelated meaning.
10. British Rail
Transportation & Travel · Rail and Transit Abbreviations
Brand name of the state-owned railway of Great Britain from 1965 to its privatization in the mid-1990s; the organization was formally British Railways from 1948. Its double-arrow logo still marks National Rail stations.
Example: Grandad always says the trains ran better under BR, though nobody remembers the sandwiches fondly.
Created by nationalizing the Big Four companies in 1948. Privatization from 1994 to 1997 split it into track, train operating and leasing companies. The double-arrow symbol, designed in 1965, remains in use on signs and tickets. Great British Railways is being set up to bring track and trains back under a single public body.
11. Battle royale
Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations
Multiplayer genre in which many players drop onto a shrinking map and fight until one player or team remains. Fortnite, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone are the best known.
Example: Our squad finally got a win in the new BR mode last night.
Named after the Japanese novel and film Battle Royale (1999 and 2000). PUBG (2017) made the genre a phenomenon, and Fortnite's free-to-play mode the same year turned it into a cultural trend. In other contexts BR means Brazil or "best regards".
12. Branch (Br)
Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations
Southern and Appalachian word for a small stream that branches from a larger one, used for roads that follow it. USPS abbreviates it BR.
Example: Head up Laurel Br Rd past the church.
Br. also abbreviates brother, branch office and British. Small streams are branches in the South, brooks in New England, creeks in the Midwest and runs in parts of Pennsylvania and Virginia.
