1. Ambulate (ambulatory)
Medical · Nursing Abbreviations
Charting shorthand meaning to walk, or describing a patient who can walk. It appears in activity orders ("amb QID"), in progress notes ("amb 150 ft with rolling walker") and in arrival status, such as a patient who walked into the emergency department.
Example: Pt amb in hall x2 with standby assist, tolerated well, no dizziness.
Written "amb" in lowercase or "AMB". "Ambulatory care" refers to outpatient services, so an ambulatory surgery center treats patients who go home the same day. Distance, assistive device and assist level are the key details expected in a walking note, because they show progress from one shift to the next.
2. Ambassador (Amb.)
Writing & Everyday · Title and Honorific Abbreviations
Applies to a diplomat of the highest rank accredited to a foreign government or an international organization, used before the name in lists, briefings and correspondence.
Example: Amb. Rivera presented her credentials to the president of Kenya on Monday.
Ambassadors are addressed in speech and formal letters as "Your Excellency" or, in US practice, "Mr. Ambassador" or "Madam Ambassador." US custom lets former ambassadors keep the title as a courtesy, while many other countries do not. Invitations often pair the title with H.E. (His or Her Excellency).
3. Amphotericin B (AmB)
Medical · Drug Abbreviations
Broad-spectrum antifungal given IV for life-threatening infections such as cryptococcal meningitis, mucormycosis and invasive candidiasis. It comes as conventional amphotericin B deoxycholate and as lipid formulations such as liposomal amphotericin B.
Example: L-AmB 5 mg/kg IV daily for mucormycosis; premedicate and hydrate.
Conventional and liposomal products have very different doses (about 1 mg/kg versus 3 to 6 mg/kg), and ISMP has reported fatal overdoses when the conventional form was given at a lipid-formulation dose. Infusion fevers and chills earned it the nickname "ampho-terrible". In nursing notes AmB means ambulate.
