ADAT stands for Advance diet as tolerated, a nursing abbreviation.
Diet order instructing nurses to progress the patient from clear liquids to full liquids to a regular or prescribed diet as long as each step is tolerated without nausea, vomiting or distension. It is common after surgery and bowel rest.
Example: Clear liquids now, ADAT to cardiac diet; notify for nausea or distension.
Usage notes
Many surgeons now allow early solid food after uncomplicated abdominal surgery as part of enhanced recovery (ERAS) pathways. "Tolerating" is judged by appetite, absence of vomiting and comfort. The final diet type, such as diabetic or low sodium, should be named in the order.
