1. Behavioral health

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Umbrella term covering mental health, substance use and related behavior-driven conditions, used by insurers, health systems and integrated primary care programs. It emphasizes the link between behaviors and overall health.

Example: BH integration: warm handoff from primary care to on-site therapist for anxiety.

Insurers often manage behavioral health benefits separately through "carve-out" companies. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 requires comparable coverage for BH and medical care in many plans. Pronounced as letters.

2. Bahrain

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Island kingdom in the Persian Gulf linked to Saudi Arabia by the 25-kilometre King Fahd Causeway, with Manama as its capital and BHR as its alpha-3 code. The Bahraini dinar (BHD) is one of the world's highest-valued currencies.

Example: The conference badge listed Manama, BH as the delegate's city.

Bahrain hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet and an annual Formula 1 Grand Prix. The .bh domain is used mainly by local businesses.

3. Black hole

Science & Engineering · Astronomy & Space Abbreviations

Region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape once it crosses the event horizon. Stellar black holes form when massive stars collapse; supermassive ones sit in galactic centers.

Example: Gaia found a dormant BH about 33 times the Sun's mass orbiting a nearby star.

Karl Schwarzschild found the first black hole solution of general relativity in 1916, and John Wheeler popularized the term "black hole" in 1967. Cygnus X-1 was the first widely accepted black hole. Stephen Hawking predicted in 1974 that black holes slowly emit radiation and could eventually evaporate.

4. Baruch Hashem (Blessed is God)

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

Hebrew expression of gratitude, literally "blessed is the Name", used in conversation by observant Jews, as in answering "How are you?" with "Baruch Hashem". As B"H, it is also written at the top of letters and documents.

Example: The note began with a small "BH" in the top right corner.

At the top of a page, B"H is read by many as Baruch Hashem and by others, including Chabad, as B'ezrat Hashem ("with God's help"). Writing God's name in full on papers that might be thrown away is avoided, which is one reason the abbreviation is used. Sephardic communities often use BSD instead.

5. Bohrium (Bh)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Bohrium (element 107) is a synthetic transactinide in group 7, below rhenium, first made by fusing bismuth-209 with chromium-54 nuclei. Experiments in 2000 with just a handful of atoms showed that it forms a volatile oxychloride, as group 7 chemistry predicts.

Example: The 2000 experiment placed Bh firmly in the same group as manganese, technetium and rhenium.

Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg's team at the GSI Helmholtz Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, made bohrium in 1981. It honors Danish physicist Niels Bohr; the discoverers first proposed nielsbohrium (Ns), but IUPAC shortened it to bohrium in 1997 to follow the convention of using surnames.
