AMOLED stands for Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, a consumer electronics abbreviation also used in science.
OLED display in which each pixel is driven by its own thin-film transistor, enabling the large, fast, high-resolution screens used in smartphones and smartwatches. Samsung's Super AMOLED integrates the touch sensor into the display.
Example: The phone's 6.7-inch AMOLED screen refreshes at up to 120 Hz.
Usage notes
The active matrix contrasts with passive-matrix OLED (PMOLED), which suits only small, simple displays. Samsung popularized the term with the Galaxy S in 2010. LTPO backplanes let AMOLED screens vary their refresh rate down to 1 Hz, enabling always-on displays with little battery drain. Some users sensitive to flicker notice the PWM dimming used at low brightness.
