1. Aortic valve replacement
Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations
Replacement of a diseased aortic valve with a prosthesis, either by open surgery (SAVR) or by catheter (TAVR). Charts record "s/p AVR" with the valve type, because mechanical and bioprosthetic valves carry different anticoagulation and imaging needs.
Example: S/p mechanical AVR in 2015 on warfarin, INR goal 2.0 to 3.0.
Mechanical aortic valves typically require an INR target of 2.0 to 3.0, higher with extra risk factors, and direct oral anticoagulants are contraindicated with them. Bioprosthetic valves need only short-term or no anticoagulation. Patients with prosthetic valves need antibiotic prophylaxis before certain dental procedures. In electronics AVR means automatic voltage regulator.
2. Automatic voter registration
Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations
Policy under which eligible citizens are registered to vote, or have their registration updated, when they interact with agencies such as the motor vehicle department, unless they decline. More than 20 states and the District of Columbia have adopted it.
Example: Thanks to AVR, she was registered when she renewed her driver's license.
Oregon became the first state to implement AVR in 2016. Systems differ in whether people can opt out at the counter or are notified afterward and given a chance to decline. The policy builds on the "motor voter" requirements of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
3. Audio/video receiver
Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations
Home theater component that combines a multichannel amplifier, surround-sound decoder, radio tuner and HDMI switcher, connecting sources such as consoles and streamers to a TV and speakers.
Example: The AVR decodes Dolby Atmos and powers all seven speakers plus the two in the ceiling.
Channel layouts such as 5.1 or 7.2.4 count main speakers, subwoofers and height speakers. Major brands include Denon, Marantz, Yamaha and Onkyo. Room-correction systems such as Audyssey and Dirac measure the room with a microphone to tune the sound. AVR also means automatic voltage regulation in UPS units and a family of microcontrollers used in Arduino boards.
