AEB stands for Automatic emergency braking, an automotive abbreviation.
Safety system that detects an imminent collision with a vehicle, pedestrian or obstacle ahead and applies the brakes automatically if the driver does not react. AEB is standard on most new cars in the US, Europe and Japan.
Example: The car stopped on its own when traffic ahead halted suddenly; AEB saved my bumper.
Usage notes
Twenty automakers voluntarily agreed in 2016 to make AEB standard in the US by 2022. A NHTSA rule finalized in 2024 requires more capable AEB, including pedestrian detection at night, on new light vehicles by September 2029. IIHS studies found AEB cut rear-end crashes roughly in half.
