ICSI stands for Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
IVF laboratory technique in which a single sperm is injected directly into each egg with a fine needle, used mainly for male factor infertility and previous fertilization failure. It allows fertilization even with very low sperm counts.
Example: Severe oligospermia; IVF with ICSI, 9 of 11 mature eggs fertilized.
Usage notes
The first ICSI pregnancy was reported in Belgium in 1992. It is now used in the majority of IVF cycles in the US, even without male factor, although benefits in that setting are debated. Sperm can be retrieved surgically from the testis for men without sperm in the ejaculate. Pronounced "ICK-see".
