IUI stands for Intrauterine insemination, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.
Fertility treatment in which washed, concentrated sperm are placed directly into the uterus through a thin catheter around the time of ovulation, often combined with ovulation-inducing medications. It is simpler and cheaper than IVF.
Example: Unexplained infertility; letrozole cycle with IUI after hCG trigger, day 14.
Usage notes
IUI is commonly used for mild male factor infertility, unexplained infertility and donor sperm. Per-cycle pregnancy rates are modest, typically about 5–20 percent depending on age and diagnosis. Several cycles are often tried before moving to IVF. Pronounced as letters.
