AAG stands for Assistant attorney general, a court abbreviation.
Lawyer in an attorney general's office. In the US Department of Justice, an AAG is a Senate-confirmed official who heads a litigating division such as Antitrust, Civil Rights or Criminal; in many state AG offices the title refers to staff attorneys who litigate for the state.
Example: The AAG for the Antitrust Division announced the merger challenge at a press conference.
Usage notes
State usage varies: some states call line lawyers deputy attorneys general and reserve AAG for supervisors, while others, such as Washington, call their line lawyers AAGs. When a federal AAG post is vacant, a principal deputy assistant attorney general often runs the division.
