Bankr. stands for Bankruptcy court, a court abbreviation.
Citation abbreviation identifying a decision of a federal bankruptcy court, placed before the district in the court-and-date parenthetical, as in "(Bankr. D. Del. 2020)". Bankruptcy courts are units of the district courts, staffed by bankruptcy judges appointed by the courts of appeals for 14-year terms.
Example: The debtor relied on In re Smith, a Bankr. S.D.N.Y. ruling on cure costs in lease assumptions.
Usage notes
Bankruptcy judges are not Article III judges, which is why Stern v. Marshall (2011) limited their power to enter final judgment on certain state-law counterclaims. Their opinions are reported in West's Bankruptcy Reporter. Do not confuse "Bankr." (the court) with "B.R." (the reporter); a typical citation uses both.
