AIM stands for Aeronautical Information Manual, an aviation abbreviation.
FAA guide explaining flight procedures, ATC phraseology, airspace, weather services and aeromedical facts for pilots. Unlike the FARs it is not regulatory, but its procedures are treated as the standard of good practice.
Example: Check AIM chapter 4 for the correct radio phraseology at nontowered airports.
Usage notes
Revised about twice a year. Other countries publish comparable material in their Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), a document required by ICAO. Although nonregulatory, the AIM is regularly cited by the FAA and judges in enforcement cases as evidence of the expected standard of care.
