ARTCC stands for Air Route Traffic Control Center, an aviation abbreviation.
FAA facility that controls IFR aircraft in the en-route phase across a large region; about 20 centers cover the contiguous United States. Pilots address them by name, such as "Chicago Center" or "Oakland Center."
Example: A contractor's fire at the Chicago ARTCC in 2014 disrupted thousands of flights for more than two weeks.
Usage notes
Usually called simply "Center." Oakland and New York centers also manage vast oceanic airspace using satellite datalink and procedural separation. Each center's airspace is divided into sectors worked by individual controllers. ICAO calls the equivalent an area control centre (ACC).
